Welcome to the Empathy Page of my website.
What is empathy?
Empathy is the ability to experience the feelings of someone else.
We practice empathy through reading fiction as we are living the life of that character and therefore experiencing their emotions.
I am one of the growing number of children's authors who have joined the Empathy Movement.
I have been trained by Empathy Lab UK to deliver talks and workshops to children to increase empathy levels. It's our belief that by increasing empathy we will improve understanding in people who are not like ourselves and therefore build a more tolerant and compassionate society.
My book, Call Me Lion, has been selected by Empathy Lab UK as one of the Read For Empathy 2023 collection.
Empathy Lab UK is asking schools to sign up with them to become part of Empathy Day on 8 June 2023 and to learn different ways to make their school environment a more empathetic and understanding place. The positive implications are numerous, with some schools having eradicated all bullying.
Please sign up to be included - it is all free - you just need to visit their website to register: Empathy Lab UK
If you would like to organise an author visit to your school or library based around Empathy please contact me. I'd be delighted to come as the visits are thought-provoking, eye-opening but most of all FUN!
After my recent Empathy Day visit to Habberdashers' Boys Prep School when asked if the children benefitted from my visit, the librarian Clare Zinkin had this to say: "Yes, we learned about empathy and how empathy is gained through reading books and understanding how characters act. We understood how to show our emotions, that it’s important to recognise what these are, and to learn to recognise them in others."
I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have about Empathy Day, my training or my visits. Just contact me.
